SLARC's Race Relations Week is the only week-long celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination that we know of. It has taken place since 1991. Workshops, art exhibits, school events, films and discussions take place throughout the town for a week at the end of March. Local businesses hold open houses, the Mayor signs a Proclamation for Race Relations Week, and the week ends in a community-wide multicultural pot-luck feast.
The Mary Carpenter -- People Making Changes award is presented to a community member who has worked to build bridges of understanding between people. Past winners include Florence Woolner (2009), Peggy Sanders (2008), Neil Michelin (2007), Laurel Wood and Garnet Angeconeb (2006), Marcel Angeconeb (2005), Garnet Angeconeb (2004), Lorraine Kenny (2002), Garnet Angeconeb, Lorraine Kenny, Eno Anderson and the voices for the future youth group (2001), Ralph Johnson (2000), Youth Volunteers Janina Legros, Matthew Laverty, Aleisha DeRose, Carla Vinczeffy and Lisa Hindy (1999), Rene Boucher & Jean Korobanik (1998), Monika Orzechowska (1997) and Ennis Fiddler (1996).
